Scope

'Notebook belonging to Alan J. B. Wace. The volume contains manuscript notes relating to his time in Cyrenaica with the War Damage Committee.'

Custodian History

'The notebook was gifted by Dr E.B. French, the daughter of A.J.B. Wade, to the Society for Libyan Studies Archive in 1995. There is a note in the John Dore catalogue stating that the notebook was "sent to archive via Professor G.D.B. Jones And Dr Walker (see letter in files from Jones To Walker).'

Biographical history

'Alan John Bayard Wace (13 July 1879- 9 November 1957), was an archaeologist who served as the director of the British School of Athens from 1914 to 1923.', Following this, he occupied the position of Deputy Keeper in the Department of Textiles in the Victoria and Albert Museum for a decade, the second Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge (1934 - 1944) and subsequently as professor at the Farouk I University in Alexandria, Egypt, from 1943 to 1952.', He was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, 1948, 1951, 1952 - 1955.', During his career, he was also a member of many foreign archaeology societies including the Royal Swedish Academy, the American Philosophical Society, German Archaeology Institute, American Archaeology Institute (Hon.
