Arrangement

Five giraffes, four oryx, addax, antelope (Hartebeest?), four quadrupeds, bovid, pelican, indeterminate, abstract, cupmarks, grooves, incised lines, pecking: Panel surface is covered with numerous, superimposed incised images of animals, some very eroded and indeterminate, lines and pecking. In centre of panel is outline of large addax facing left with small head, long upward wavy horns, abstract shape on neck, superimposed over indeterminate incised image, circular motif below neck. Addax is superimposed over outline of giraffe facing left with long thin neck, triangular pointed ears or horns, two eyes, pecking on hide, cupmark on rump, short lines above rump. Giraffe is superimposed over lightly incised outline of quadruped facing right with phallus and rounded belly, head indistinct. Superimposed over incised indeterminate image facing right, head visible above quadruped. To the right is eroded outline of giraffe facing left with long legs and tail, head indistinct. Neck superimposed over abstract motif (nasse?). Superimposed over giraffe is outline of bovid facing right with zigzag motif on hide. On top right of panel is outline of giraffe facing left with long legs, pecking on hide, cupmarks at bottom of forelegs and between forelegs, top of head exfoliated. To left of addax is pecked an incised outline of oryx facing left with long backward curving horns. Below head are pecked lines of indeterminate image, possible a human figure facing right, arms indistinct. Above are incised lines forming indeterminate images and an elongated abstract or indeterminate image. This superimposes outline of small giraffe facing right with upward pointing horns, which in turn superimposes eroded outline of small quadruped facing right with upward curving horns, cut through by U-shaped groove. To the left is pecked outline of quadruped facing left, hind quarters indistinct, superimposed by incised abstract symbol. At the base of the panel, below and superimposed over lower legs of the addax, are several smaller incised animals, lines and pecking. On the left is an antelope facing left with upward then inward curving horns, line across belly, possibly a Hartebeest. Image is within an incised curving shape from which several short and longer lines radiate. To the right, partly superimposing radiating lines, is outline of quadruped facing right with rounded belly, head indistinct. Front end of quadruped forms hind of oryx facing right with long backward curving horns, lines and pecking on hide, long line (phallus?) below belly, curving line from nose to foreleg. To the right is outline of oryx facing right with long backward curving horns, pecking and lines on hide. U-shaped groove and incised lines to the right. Above is outline of small oryx facing right with long backward curving horn. On bottom right of panel is outline of bird facing right with long beak, looking backward, possibly a pelican. Numerous incised lines, pecking, and remnants of other images, now indeterminate. Figures 5.7a, 10.5b Giraffes in Pauphillet (1953)
