Arrangement

Four humans, elephant, three giraffes, two cows, rhinoceros, bovid, four quadrupeds, two ostriches, inscription, abstract: Following the numbering system in Le Quellec (1985): 1. Pecked outline of giraffe facing right with long neck, small horns, tail bifurcated or repecked. 2. Pecked, indistinct quadruped partly superimposed by carving 3. Pecked outline of giraffe facing right with long neck, head partly obscured by inscription. 4. Short pecked Libyan inscription positioned vertically on rock surface. 5. Pecked outline of giraffe facing right with long neck, small horns, peck mark for eye, pecked hide, tail partly obscured by Libyan inscription (4). Giraffe is superimposed over (6) - pecked outline of bovid facing left with upward and slightly backward curving horns, one large eye, pecked hide. 7. Pecked outline of circular shape superimposed on bovid (6) and partly underlying the end of the trunk of carving (12). 8. Pecked outline of neck and head of long-necked bird, facing left, probably an ostrich. 9. Pecked outline of human facing right with outstretched arm attached to curved object (bow?) which extends to neck of ostrich (8). 10. Pecked and incised outline of human facing left and bent forwards. One arm bent up towards head, other arm behind. One leg bent, other leg straight, possible tail, line extending from pelvis (Le Quellec suggests this may be extended phallus or piece of animal hide). 11. Incised outline of human facing right, bent forward with arms bent at elbows and raised to head height, right hand holds possible bow and arrow. Legs bent, possible tail. Top of head pecked. Pecked, eroded lines by the feet of this figure, possibly another human. 12. Incised outline of large elephant facing left with thick legs, bulbous head, and trunk, mouth open, lateral line on trunk, bi-ocular. Possibly depicted in motion, although far side hind leg is pecked and may have been added later or not finished, or may represent an extended phallus. Ends of front and rear legs pecked rather than incised, possibly unfinished. 13. Pecked outline of bull facing right with forward curving horns and small phallus. Superimposed by elephant (12). 14. Pecked cow facing right with upward then inward curving horns. 15. Curvilinear shape, possibly snake (Le Quellec). 16. Pecked and incised outline of quadruped facing right with small head and short upward pointing horns. Dorsal line of quadruped is same as stomach of elephant (12) and part of additional hind leg of elephant forms part of hind leg of quadruped. 17. Incised outline of human facing forward with arms bent and raised to head height. Hands appear to have three fingers. Pecked lines at base of torso may depict legs and feet added later or unfinished. Figure partly superimposed by elephant (12). 18. Pecked outline of tiny quadruped facing right. 19. Incised outline of quadruped facing right with pecked eyes, possible horn and one foreleg only depicted. Rear end either incomplete or obscured by elephant (12). 20. Incised outline of rhinoceros facing right with thick legs, short upward tail, two unequal horns on snout, large eye pecked at later date, and later repecking of head and horns. Superimposed by pecked front foot of elephant (12). 21. Pecked and incised outline of ostrich, facing right, with long neck and long legs. Legs at right angles as if running. bi-ocular, beak open. Superimposed by hind leg of elephant (12). Figures 7.50a, A.2.8a-b, A.2.9
