Scope

"This series contains: Thorn's research notes relating to Rowe's excavationS and finds in Cyrene, photographs of Rowe's 1952, 1955, 1956 & 1957 expeditions to Cyrene with Manchester University, and Thorn's biographical research into the working and personal life of Alan Rowe. In addition, this series includes Rowe's medical supplies (glass medicine bottles) and empty containers used to collect fragments and excavated finds from the Manchester University expedititions (D26/13/8), alongslide Rowe's glass lecture slides (D26/13/6).", u"Subseries within D26/13 also include material created or collated by individuals related to Rowe, such as Linda Burns and Shelia Ord (Rowe's secretary). Their placement within the Rowe series is in adherence with Thorn's original order and arrangement, and have therefore remained alongside the Rowe Papers."

Biographical history

"Rowe's previous archaeological career in Egypt and Palestine, culminating in his prestigious excavations in and around Alexandria, including the tomb complex at Kom-el-Shukafa, prepared him for a post as Special Lecturer in Near Eastern Archaeology in Manchester University. In spring 1951 he enquired about the 'possibilities of arrnaging an archaeologuical expedition to Cyrene'. Rowe success in this enquiry resulted in four campagins carried out throughout the decade.", u"Rowe's campaigns, according to the University, fall within his annual leave dates at the end of the academic year, although his leave for 1957 is unrecorded.", u"First Campaign - leave 'mid July to mid-september 1952", u"Second Campaign - leave '27th august to 27 november 1955", Third Campaign - leave 9th June 1956 (for 3 months?)', Fourth campaign - accounts 10 June to 15th Aug 1957', These excavations and surveys were carried out over the necropolis in various areas in an attempt, in his first campagin and completed in the second, to select a series of tomb types.
